GEORGE TOWN: A total of 209 cases of abuse involving children were recorded in Penang from January to last September.
Chairman of the state’s Social Development and Non-Islamic Affairs Committee, Chong Eng said, of the total, 91 cases involved sexual abuse; neglect (67); physical (42) and emotional (9).
“The Department of Social Welfare (JKM) always provides immediate measures and support to victims according to standard operating procedures (SOP).
“One of the SOPs is that JKM rescues children within 10 hours after a complaint or information related to abuse is received,” he said in the Penang State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session here today.
Chong Eng (DAP-Padang Lalang) answered A. Kumaresan’s (PKR-Batu Uban) question about the number of child abuse cases that occurred in the state throughout this year.
Commenting further, Chong Eng said, JKM will also take the victim to the hospital to get proper treatment if there is a need and confirmation from a medical officer related to abuse.
“Temporary orders under Section 19, Children’s Act 2001 and permanent orders under Section 30 of the Children’s Act 2001 will be obtained from the court to place the child under the care of a fit and proper person or be placed in a safe place.
“Advice and counseling intervention services will also be provided to victims of abuse by JKM,” he said.
He added that the child protection team appointed under Section 7 of the Children’s Act 2001 also played a role in implementing advocacy programs related to child abuse at the local community level.
In the meantime, he said, among the factors and causes of child abuse is due to financial problems; negligence of parents or guardians; the abuser is involved in a crime; children follow boyfriends and so on. – MESSENGER
