Forensic experts are consistent in the cause of death of ‘Baby Syifaa’ due to pressure on the neck

SEREMBAN: Forensic experts at Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital (HTJ) Seremban maintained that the cause of death of a baby girl, Nour Rania Asyifaa Yuseri or ‘Baby Syifaa’ was due to pressure on the neck.

On the proceedings of the third day of the inquest to investigate the cause of the baby’s death at the Seremban Coroner’s Court today, the 18th witness, Dr. Hanif Mahmud, 40, in his testimony before the Coroner, Datin Surita Budin said that the pressure on the neck was based on the effects of the wound abrasion (abrasion) on the neck of the 15-month-old baby that continued to rise without any pressure or internal injury to the victim’s body.

Hanif said, the external examination found that there were 12 external injuries including abrasions on the neck, left ankle, right thumb and the nail of the fifth toe was partially removed.

“Effects of wounds abrasion (abrasion) on the neck measuring 11 centimeters (cm) long and 0.5 cm wide in the middle of the neck up to the left and right sides.

“This wound is a bit continuous upwards at the end, abrasions can occur if there is friction between the skin and an object with a rough surface,” he said at the inquest proceedings here today.

According to Hanif, the abrasion was only in the form of a thin straight line and based on the findings the baby may have been entangled with an object such as a rope, a fold of cloth or the like.

When asked by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Nor Azizah Mohamad, how pressure on the neck can lead to the victim’s death, Hanif said, pressure on the neck can cause an obstruction to the airway so that the victim has difficulty breathing.

“Referring to the results of the autopsy, there were abrasions on the neck which showed that the victim’s body did not get enough oxygen and the pressure on the neck caused death,” he said.

Meanwhile, the lawyers representing the family of ‘Baby Syifaa’ Gaithri Thomas and Hafiz Norkhan who questioned the forensic expert whether there would be net marks if the victim’s neck was caught on the edge of the hammock.

Hanif said, if the baby moves, the effect is difficult to obtain and it is necessary to take into account the position of the victim who is 73 cm tall and weighs 7.65 kilograms.

He also agreed with Hafiz’s statement that in the situation of ‘Baby Syifaa’ the victim of ‘struggle’ before his death.

Also participating in the inquest proceedings, the nanny’s observing lawyer, Noliana Ali Othman. The baby’s parents. Yuseri Yusoff, 39 and Anida Idrus, 41, were also seen present with their supporters and family.

In the proceedings that continued in the afternoon, the prosecution asked the court to reprimand the victim’s father for swearing at the witness, the forensic expert and the investigating officer of the case by uttering stupid and impolite words that could disturb the emotions of all the witnesses.

The coroner described the matter as serious and asked counsel to advise his client.
