SEREMBAN: Forensic experts at Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital (HTJ) Seremban maintained that the cause of death of a baby girl, Nour Rania Asyifaa Yuseri or ‘Baby Syifaa’ was due to pressure on the neck.
On the proceedings of the third day of the inquest to investigate the cause of the baby’s death at the Seremban Coroner’s Court today, the 18th witness, Dr. Hanif Mahmud, 40, in his testimony before the Coroner, Datin Surita Budin said that the pressure on the neck was based on the effects of the wound abrasion (abrasion) on the neck of the 15-month-old baby that continued to rise without any pressure or internal injury to the victim’s body.
Hanif said, the external examination found that there were 12 external injuries including abrasions on the neck, left ankle, right thumb and the nail of the fifth toe was partially removed.
“Effects of wounds abrasion (abrasion) on the neck measuring 11 centimeters (cm) long and 0.5 cm wide in the middle of the neck up to the left and right sides.
“This wound is a bit continuous upwards at the end, abrasions can occur if there is friction between the skin and an object with a rough surface,” he said at the inquest proceedings here today.
According to Hanif, the abrasion was only in the form of a thin straight line and based on the findings the baby may have been entangled with an object such as a rope, a fold of cloth or the like.
When asked by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Nor Azizah Mohamad, how pressure on the neck can lead to the victim’s death, Hanif said, pressure on the neck can cause an obstruction to the airway so that the victim has difficulty breathing.
“Referring to the results of the autopsy, there were abrasions on the neck which showed that the victim’s body did not get enough oxygen and the pressure on the neck caused death,” he said.
