GE15: Malay contractors under PKMM pledge support for BN

KUANTAN: Malay contractors under the Malaysian Malay Contractors Association (PKMM) will continue to support the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 15th General Election (GE-15).

PKMM Vice President, Abd. Gapar Lambak said that the support was based on BN’s commitment not to marginalize the bumiputera contractor group, but rather provide various methods of assistance to ensure their fate is protected, especially to compete with non-bumiputera contractors.

“For example, the government in the 2023 Budget provides various initiatives for contractors such as an allocation of RM500 million specifically for G1 to G4 class contractors, among others to carry out maintenance works for Federal roads, small bridges and bridges, houses of worship and infrastructure damaged by floods .

“The government also through Budget 2023 provides short-term financing to Bumiputera contractors involved in fields such as electrical and construction through the Express Contract Financing Scheme (SPIKE) with funds of RM20 million.

“The government will also implement the nita contractor initiative to support the participation of more bumiputera women contractors in government procurement. A total of RM50 million worth of small projects will be allocated to G1 to G4 female contractors,” he said in a statement here today.

Abd. Gapar said, previously, as reported by the media, almost 50,000 of the 126,000 licensed contractors nationwide had to go out of business after failing to renew their licenses since 2018 due to not having sufficient capital account balances according to their respective classes.

He said that the Covid-19 pandemic that hit the country also caused projects to decrease, affecting most contractors from class G1 to G4.

“Alhamdulillah, the government led by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on July 14 agreed to add 11 more building materials under the Price Change Calculation (VOP) method from the previous four.

“God willing in this GE15, Malay and bumiputera contractors under PKMM will continue to support BN in line with PKMM’s stance as a BN-friendly association.

“To PKMM members, make the best decision in this GE15, see the evidence of which party is truly sincere in defending the plight of the Malay contractors,” he said. – MESSENGER
