Head of UMNO willing to be the opposition, no need to ‘beg for alms’

KUALA LUMPUR: Part of Head of UMNO Division throughout the country the party willingly played the role of the opposition with 30 parliamentary seats won in the 15th General Election (GE15).

UMNO Head of Ketereh Division, Tan Sri Annuar Musa said, Barisan Nasional (BN) does not need to ‘crawl’ just to be in the Federal Government, but rather to become a dignified and authoritative opposition.

“Let us be the opposition, and whoever wants to form a government, please do so. People (political parties) who have a lot of seats, try.

“But, in my opinion, UMNO should not be a ‘charity beggar’ to anyone (a coalition of other political parties). If we enter as a minority in any party, unless they want to join us, then the Prime Minister is from UMNO.

“Whether Pakatan Harapan (PH) wants to offer a Prime Minister from UMNO, or Perikatan Nasional (PN) wants to offer the position of Prime Minister from UMNO, we will support it. But just sticking, no need.

“We are confident that if we can fix this party, give space to a new leader, we are confident that in the upcoming GE16 UMNO will return to power as the absolute ruler in this country,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur Trade Center today.

He said this on behalf of dozens of UMNO division heads so that its President, Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi resigned as a result of his failure to lead BN until he lost badly in GE15.

Also present in the meeting were the Head of UMNO Batu Division; Datuk Yahya Mat Ghani; Pasir Salak Divisional UMNO Leader, Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman and Jempol Divisional UMNO Leader, Datuk Seri Mohd. Salim Sharif.

Commenting further, Annuar said that UMNO also took the same stance in GE14, after BN was definitely defeated by PH and became the opposition in the Dewan Rakyat.

“Some people ask, why can I enter the government in the last election? I have to be clear, we agreed to be the opposition only because after PH fell (during the Sheraton Steps). UMNO entered the government to stabilize the country at that time.

“This time, we don’t want to go in because it’s the same as before. We are consistent when the people do not give us a mandate, then we are ready to play the role of the opposition,” he said.-UTUSAN
