KHM aims for Malaysia to reach the semi-finals of the Cup of Nations

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (KHM) has set targets for Malaysian Tigers to qualify for the semi-finals of the Cup of Nations which will take place in Pochefstroom, South Africa next November 28, even though Malaysia will make its debut in the tournament.

The target was voiced by the Chairman of the National Management Committee, Datuk Najmi Razak in a press conference held at the National Hockey Stadium, Bukit Jalil a while ago.

A total of 20 players have already been selected including four new players who did not play in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup this season, namely goalkeeper Andy Albert, Syarman Mat Tee, Ramadan Rosli and Faizal Saari who has just returned from the Dutch hockey club, ZSV Schaerweijde.

For Najmi, the target is considered realistic even though on paper Malaysia is the team with the highest ranking among the eight competing teams, which is 10th in the world.

“KHM wants to see this team qualify for the semi-finals first, to win the group. After that the matches will change, so so far we are aiming for the semi-finals first if everything goes well.

“As you saw during the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, we didn’t start well but in the end with high fighting spirit and the instructions we followed, the tempo and luck changed, the players also realized that if we lose, we don’t have to lose until the end, if we win we must win until the championship,

“That’s the best lesson because I told the players to learn from what happened at the Asian Games and the Asian Cup, where we started well but didn’t become champions,” explained Najmi.

Malaysia is placed in group B, about to recalculate with South Korea, Japan and Canada.
