DOHA: A handful of Iranian supporters mocked England defender Harry Maguire with a banner ahead of the 2022 World Cup clash between the two teams yesterday.
Their actions, however, did not affect the Three Lions who instead opened the Group B campaign by beating Iran 6-2 at the Khalifa International Stadium.
Before the match started, some Iranian fans who gathered outside the stadium posed for pictures with banners mocking Manchester United and England star Maguire.
One of the banners read ‘It (the championship) won’t come home because of Harry Maguire.’
While the second banner read: ‘Harry Maguire your defense is terrible.’
The 29-year-old, who also led England’s challenge as they emerged runners-up in Europe 2020, has often been the target of criticism for his performance with United last season.
He has also often been sidelined by the club’s new manager, Erik ten Hag this season.
Maguire has featured in just four Premier League games this season under the Ten Hag after losing his place to Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.
A few days before England leave for Qatar for their World Cup campaign, reports have spread that United want to let go of the former Leicester City mainstay next summer despite the losses.
The central defender struggled to repeat his impressive form with Leicester, which prompted the Red Devils to buy him for 85 million pounds (RM465.52 million) in 2019.
Maguire however played well with England. – AGENCIES
