DOHA: African champions Senegal revived their chances of advancing to the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup when they beat Qatar 3-1 just now, putting the hosts on the brink of elimination.
Qatar will be eliminated if the Netherlands win or draw with Ecuador in the other Group A match which will take place at 12 midnight tonight.
If that happens, Qatar will carve out bad history, becoming the first host nation to exit the tournament after just two games.
In the action at the Al Thumama Stadium, Senegal took the lead in the 41st minute through a goal by Baulaye Dia who wisely took advantage of the opportunity in front of the goal.
In the first half, Senegal led 1-0 and continued the second half, Aliou Cisse’s men did not wait long when they scored the second goal in the 48th minute through Famara Diedhiou.
Qatar managed to close the gap in the 78th minute through Mohammed Muntari, but Bamba Dieng ended the home team’s comeback with the third goal in the 84th minute.
The home team lost 0-2 to Ecuador in the opening action, last Sunday will face the Netherlands in the last match of the group.
Senegal, on the other hand, will meet Ecuador in a match that is expected to be intense and will decide which team goes to the knockout round. – AGENCIES
