BORDER HEAD: National Alliance (PN) candidate, Dr. Siti Mastura Muhammad created the biggest surprise in the Kepala Batas parliamentary seat when she defeated the preferred candidate, Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican with a majority of 2,867 votes.
The result was announced by the Electoral Officer at the vote tallying center at the Kepala Batas Industrial Training Institute (ILP), Zulkifli Rashid at about 1.06am.
Siti Mastura from Pas got 28,604 votes while Reezal Merican got 25,737 votes.
Two other candidates namely Danial Abdul Majeed (Young – PH) and Hamidi Abu Hassan (Fighter) obtained 14,214 and 747 votes respectively.
Kepala Batas Parliament, which has been a BN stronghold for more than four decades, was previously one of the BN parliamentary constituencies that survived the ‘political tsunami’ that hit the country in 2018.
In the meantime, Siti Mastura when met by reporters was grateful for the victory and hoped to be able to open a ‘new book’ in addition to improving what is available in Kepala Batas.
“Thank you to everyone who voted for me and I pray that Kepala Batas becomes the best place for everyone,” he said.
For the record, in the last GE14, Siti Mastura lost to the same opponent, Reezal Merican, when she only obtained 12,120 votes compared to the 22,459 votes obtained by the former Cabinet Minister.
Meanwhile, another candidate, Dr. Zaidi Zakaria (PKR) on the other hand obtained 17,723 votes in the competition involving three corners. – MESSENGER
